ASPIRE TO BE RELEVANT AND SUCCESSFUL: BANIGO TELLS WOMEN

The Deputy Governor of Rivers State Dr. (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry Banigo has advised women to aspire to be relevant and successful in their chosen career.

The Deputy Governor gave this advice during the 6th Triennial Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) at the Earnest Ikoli Press centre in Port Harcourt.

Represented by her Special Assistant on Research and Social Media, Uki Asemota Dr. Banigo said the table of success is not limited to any specific gender but to anyone who aspires. “If you can aspire, I am more than certain that you can be successful” she emphasized.



She said Governor Wike, who she described as a gender friendly Governor, has taken steps to encourage women into different positions in his Administration, stressing that it behoves on women to involve themselves in politics from the grass roots.


“We need more women in administration, we need more women in legislation; we need more women in politics; we need more women in journalism. With more women in administration; we can regulate the society for more gender balance; with more women in legislation; we can influence policies to our advantage; with more women in politics, we can make our voices loud enough in governance; and with more women in journalism, we can control the narrative in reportage of issues pertaining to the girl child.” The Deputy Governor stressed.

Dr. Banigo who said the theme of the conference “Gender and Conflict Sensitivity Reporting, the Role of Women Journalist” is apt regretted that the birth of Social Media has made it easy to spread falsehood and urged female journalists to be  mindful of the sort of messages they share.

In her remarks the National President of NAWOJ Mrs. Ifenyinwa  Omowole said female journalists have the responsibility of keeping the country safe through their reportage because in times of conflict and crisis women are the worst hit, stressing that female journalists have the responsibility of promoting peace  instead of heating up the polity.

Also speaking the General Manager of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation Mr. Vincent Ake who x-rayed the dangers of fake news especially in the social media advised NAWOJ and the NUJ to take urgent steps to mitigate the scourge.
