BANIGO INAUGURATES VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS RESPONSE TEAM

Rivers State Deputy Governor. Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry has inaugurated the Rivers State Violence   Against Women And Girls Response Team set up by the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN).

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, 10th December, 2019, Dr. Banigo commended the State President of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria and her team for highlighting issues of the activities marking the International Day for the elimination of all forms of violence against women which culminated on the International Human Rights   Day today.

According to Dr. Banigo the response team would create awareness on what is happening in the State, sensitize the people and ultimately bring an end to violence against women and girls.

The Deputy Governor who expressed delight with the passion and enthusiasm of members who volunteered to render selfless service to humanity thanked them for embracing the spirit of volunteerism.

In her response the president of MWAN Dr. Vetty Agala said the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria is an association of female doctors and dentists concerned with the health and wellbeing of women and children.

MWAN Rivers and the VAWG Response Team is expected to raise awareness on issues of Gender Based Violence against women and children, educate both gender on ways of preventing GBV, where to report when violated and the available response mechanism in the State.

The team is also expected to advocate for enactment, implementation and enforcement of enabling laws and policies to protect the rights of women and all citizens from violence.

The VAWG team would also provide confidential support and response for survivors of GBV including medical legal, psycho- social, security, counselling and also share monthly data in accordance with unified data template in addition to attending review meetings.

Also speaking the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Women Affairs Mrs.  Asotemi Teetito thanked the Deputy Governor for inaugurating the response team which according to her is timely
