FAMILY PLANNING A SUSTAINABLE WAY TO KEEP OUR POPULATION: BANIGO

Rivers State Deputy Governor Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo says family planning is the most sustainable way to keep our population.

Dr. Banigo stated this during a Follow -on Engagement Meeting with The Challenge Initiative (TCI) and Advocacy Working Group at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, 17th December, 2019.

 According to the Deputy Governor Family planning is very important because it not only helps to improve the health of children and their parents but also improves the standard of living of the society generally.

 Dr Banigo who is a Family Planning Champion said the Population is not just about numbers but about the People.

“The People where are they, are they healthy are they in schools, do they have houses to live in, do they have jobs to do, do they even have food and water, these are the key things if we do not attend to these needs through Family Planning we are going to have unsustainable situation in our nation”. Dr. Banigo quipped.

The Deputy Governor who reiterated the commitment of the Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo led Administration to Family Planning thanked the TCI for adding fervour to the Advocacy Working Group.

She expressed the importance of using community based theatre and songs in spreading the message of Family Planning.

In his remarks the Chairman, Family Planning Advocacy working Group, Prof. Cosmos Eyindah said the population of Rivers State is about 7.5 Million, noting that 22% of the population are women within the reproductive age bracket.

Also speaking the State Programme Coordinator TCI Rivers State Hub, Mrs. Uduak Ananaba said the TCI has supported the State Ministry of Health in addressing Data quality issues in the 23 Local Government Areas.

Highlight of the occasion was the introduction of Chief Friday Eze as a Family Planning Champion, and Mr. Victor Akpomon as Family Planning Youth Champion.
